The Challenge

Context: The companion to the Server. The M500 was a pure playback engine.

It shared the “M-Class” architecture with the M300 and M700.

  • BD-Live: This was the first generation to support interactive Blu-ray menus over the network.
  • Rack Density: It was designed to stack 10-high in a rack without overheating.

Forensic Engineering

The “Flaming SATA” (Supply Chain Failure): A deployed unit in Singapore failed with burnt wires. Analysis revealed the cable vendor (Pactech) had substituted Gold Flash plating for the specified Gold Plating on the connector pins, leading to high resistance and arcing.

  • The Fix: Immediate purge of non-compliant inventory. We emergency ordered replacement cables from a secondary vendor (YC Cable) and implemented a strict First Article Inspection material audit for all interconnects.

Team Orbit

  • Engineering Lead: Erik Norris
  • PCB: Greg Curry
  • Operations: John Lio (VP Ops), Amiee Rooney (Supply Chain)

Success Metrics

  • Supply Chain Rescue: executed emergency vendor switch (Pactech -> YC Cable) in <48 hours to resolve the “Flaming SATA” crisis.
  • Zero Line Down: Prevented production stoppage despite major component failure.
